"The Pie" Discussion

After looking back over "The Pie" that we read in class yesterday, thoughtfully & completely answer the following questions in a comment on this post. Answer all 8 of the questions being asked in one blog comment. There is a sample comment I made under the comments section to help you understand the format.

These first few questions deal with diction & how it contributes to meaning. Make sure you give all of what is being asked in order to get your full credit. Each of these questions is worth 15 points.
1. Religion is all over this piece. List ten words or phrases which evoke religion.
2. Guilt is very apparent in paragraphs three and four.  List two words, phrases or images which evoke a sense of guilt.
3. Figurative language plays a huge role throughout the story! Pick two examples of figurative language, tell me what type each is, & how they contribute to the meaning of the story.
4. How would you characterize the overall tone of the piece?  What diction (words or phrases) help convey that tone?

For the next set of questions we'll consider possible themes discussed. These are just your opinion but you must write in complete sentences in order to receive full credit for your response. Each of these questions is worth 15 points.
5. Should little boys be left unsupervised at such a young age? Is that what lead to him stealing in the first place? Explain.
6. Does stealing from a random person then lead to stealing from family/friends? Explain.
7. Have situations like this one with the boy stealing lead to society taking stricter action on adolescents? Give me an example.
8. Are there ever instances when society wouldn’t view stealing as “wrong”? Give an example.

6-no because maybe he wouldent feel as bad if it was from a random person.
7-yes because the more people keep stealing the stores get smarter and make it harder for people to steal & eaiser for the workers to catch theifs.
8-yes because you have to pay for what you want , nothing is free.

1.holy, angels, God, Eve, Adam , A squirrel nailed itself high, three or four sins, flowery dust priests give off, shadows of angels and the proximity of God, I knew sin was what you took and didn't give back.
2.Guilt- what scared me more than falling from grace was being thirsty for the rest of my life. (2) No one saw
3. boredom made me sin is personification because we know boredom cant make you sin. He was saying the only reason why he sinned was because of he was bored. (2) shadow like the shadow of an angel fleeing bad deeds is a simile because they use like or as. he might have thought it was a sign that an angel was watching from above do bad things.

5. if they are mature enough and even depending on how young they are yes little boys should be left at home especially if they have parents who worked hard and trust them. I do not believe that's what lead him to steal he even because at the end he ended up helping his sister with a project so he could have stayed home and played.
6. well it depends on how you look at it some people steal and after their first time might say that's not for me because of the guilt and consequences but if you steal then of course your going to steal from people that's close to you because they may trust you so it'd be easier.
7. situations like the boy has lead to society taking stricter action because people aren't trusted to be unsupervised in stores there's cameras everywhere be to make sure people are not doing bad things.
8. yes I believe society would view stealing as wrong because a lot of things have value and if you steal it its saying you don't care

(1) god, a squirrel nailed its self high on the trunk, falling from grace was being thirsty for the rest of my life, your hands are dirty, sin, angel, I was holy in almost every bone, Adam and eve, window of light, crawled back to the light,
(2) "neighbor came on his porch.... I raced on skinny legs to my block". "until I was finished and felt like crying because it was about the best thing I have ever tasted".
(3) plumbing that howled underneath the house.
my sweet tooth gleaming and the juice of guilt wetting my under arms.
(4)exuberant, "I muttered to myself, the pie like a discus in my hand, and hurried across the street and sat on someone's lawn".
(5)little kids should not be left unsupervised because they can get into bad habits like stealing, yes because he was bored and no one was there to remind him of how bad that is.
(6) stealing in general is bad and if your willing to steal from a stranger you will steal from your own blood.
(7) they would take stricter actions by making it to where you have to be with your child at ll times when in town.
(8)when someone like peterpan steals from the wealthy and gives to the poor, people wont think its bad.

4. for the tone I would characterize it as very religious because they're are words like God, Sin and phrases about Adam and Eve.

Unknown said...

1. hell, holy, sin, god, shadows of angels, Adam, Eve, apple, light, grace

2. "I knew sin was what you took and didn't give back" "tears blurred my eyes as I remembered the grocer's forehead"

3." boredom made me sin" boredom does actually makes you sin its just a human action given to a word or personification, using this to show and explain why he sins.

4.the overall tone of the story is nervous because even though the boy had gotten away with stealing he is still ran around cautious and was thinking about his actions

5.the boy should had been supervised instead of having his parents let him run around doing whatever he wants and not teaching him that it is wrong to steal.

6.Stealing from a random person can lead to steeling from a family member/friend because they think they can get away with anything so they try to steal more.

7. stealing in are society has lead to people making stricter rules and harsher punishments, for example at stores they put up a machine that shows if something is stolen

8.in are society stealing is a very wrong action, but are country stealing land or resources from other countries doesn't really get seen as wrong but instead good or helpful

1.holy, angels, God, Eve, Adam , A squirrel nailed itself high, three or four sins, flowery dust priests.
2.neighbor came on his porch... I raced on skinny legs to my block to hurry and get home."until I was finished and felt like crying because it was about the best thing I have ever tasted".
3.my sweet tooth gleaming and the juice of guilt wetting my under arms.
4.The tone of the story is very religious because they talked about adam and eve and that's a sin.
5.In my apionon not all little boys should be unsupervised because there are some kids out there in the world that know how to take care of them self and there are some that don't know how to cook for them selfs so they have to go out and go steal stuff for they do not die because they are Hungary.
6.If someone around the ages of the kid in the storie stole from a Stanger i don't think he would go and still from someone he knows because they are so young and everyone treats him right because they are younger then they are.
7.Not only do the people that got stole from they don't just make extra protection they think about when and if they get stole from again what they are going to do and how they are going to do it and ways not to get it stole from again.
8.They are no situations that i know of that it would be okay to steal from someone only because that is wrong and everyone knows it not matter what the person did to you they are in the wrong not you and if u steal from them the u are both in the wrong and 2 wrongs do not make a right so there for it is not going to be a situation that stealing is going to be okay to do.

1. shadows of angels , hell, proximity of god, Adam, eve, angels, sin , three of four sins greed, a squirrel nailed itself high on the trunk.
2. 'the pie like discus in my hand' ,"juice of guilt wetting my underarms.
3. a. " I heard faraway messages in the plumbing that howled underneath the house..." this is personification because plumbing doesn't really howl. this contributes to the story because he is laying under the house thinking in his happy place.
B. " juice of guilt wetting my underarms" this is a metaphor because you cant really have juice sweat. this contributes to the story because it shows how nervous an guilty this boy feels
4. I would characterize the overall tone of this piece , guilty and holy and religious," proximity of god" " I knew sin was what you took and didn't give back" " I lay until I was cold and crawled back to the light" " the pie tin glared at me... my face sticky with guilt"
those are some phrases that helped me decide the tone of this story
5. young boys shouldn't be left unsupervised at such a young age because they wouldn't have much guidance on what is wrong and what is right. They would grow bored an do things that they know is wrong.
6. stealing from a random person may lead to stealing from family/friends because if its okay to steal from a random person then they would think its ok to steal from friend or family because they feel as if they will never get caught.
7. the result of this boy stealing will lead to the society and community taking action to engaging in more secutiry and enforce the laws for example , school they enforced the lockers w locks so peole wont steal
8. i wouldn't see society as instances if they never inforced stealing laws bc some people struggle everyday and never had the gudences we have today to work for their money to buy things, some people cant afford things so they develop the stealing habit not necessarily to end up in jail but simple bc they need it.

1.hell, holy, shadows of angels, sin, flowery dust priests give off, proximity of god, Adam and Eve, your hands are dirty, shadow of an angel fleeing bad deeds, then crawled back into the light

2.my face was sticky with guilt

3.it's shadow like the shadow of an angel fleeing bad deeds.is a simile and this for feeling greedy and for steeling the apple pie
the pie like a discus in my hand.it also a simile and this how the boy stool the pie.

4.the tone is unsteady because the kid feels bad and greedy but at the same time he doesn't feel bad at all.

5.no when kids are that young they should be watched be someone in there family. and maybe that's why the boy steels because cross-eyed Johnny was there for the boy so maybe the reason is that no one told what was right or wrong.

6.yes, because the once the kid learns that he/she could get away with it the kid will think or know that he/she could get away from steeling from family.

7.yes, if the store person finds out that kids are steeling from the store he/she will get thing to help stop that. like the things at the doors so when you leave and you didn't pay they will go off.

8.yes, the people who grow-up steeling because that's how they were taught in life. so that's the only way they know how is steeling.

1. some words are hell. sin. holy. Adam and Eve. proximity to God. shadows of angels. flowery dust priests give off. the sun wavered between the branches of a yellowish sycamore. crawled back to the light, rising from one knee, then another. Angel fleeing bad deeds.
2. Just as I was going to work my cleanest finger into the pie. I realized right there and then, in my sixth year, in my tiny body of 200 bones and 3 or 4 sins.
3. The pie tin glared at me and rolled away is personification because the pie is not a human. I heard a howl like the sea is a simile because a howl is getting compared with the sea.
4. I think the tone is religious because the kid talks about religion a lot like God, shadows of angels, sin, and Adam and Eve.
5. I don't think they should be left alone because little kids don't know how life is so being left supervised is good because grownups can teach them they way. The best thing in life get stolen from him so he got mad about it.
6. I say it does because if you steal for benefits, you will most likely steal from friends or family just so it can benefit you.
7. I say yeas because kids can get in trouble if they don't get educated so they have to go to school. If they don't they will end up in juvenile hall.
8. I say never because if its important and it doesn't belong to the right person, they view it as wrong.

5.No, little boys should not be left unsupervised at such a young age because he couldn't been hurt by a car when he crossed the street, little boys don't know that when you cross to look both ways if a car is coming, he could've got caught or stolen.
6.No, because stealing from family members or friends either way stealing should never be acceptable.

5.No, because little kids don't know what they're doing they just do it, that's why they have to supervised.
6.Yes, because that person stealing can already think stealing is easy so he is most likely to steal from anyone.

1. sin, god, hell, adam, eve, dirty hands, "squirrel nailed itself high on the trunk" ( reference to crucifixion ), the snake, greed ( one of the deadly sins), crawled back to the light( cleansing of the sins )
2."no one saw", and "panicked about stealing the pie"
3."the pie like a discus in my hand", "shadow like that f an angel fleeing from bad deeds" = simile
4.I feel as if the tone was a vary down tone due to the character feeling guilty about stealing the pie.
5.I do not believe that children should be left unsupervised at a young age due to that fact that most that are wined up turning t a life of crime.
6.I do believe that stealing from a stranger leads to stealing from family due to the fact that it is a thrived for adrenaline rush.
7.I believe it does lead to stricter laws for minors cause it happens all the time in different states and countries.
8.I believe under certain circumstances that stealing would be okay whether its stealing overpriced items for the poor or to feed the homeless (the robin hood story)

1. Hell, shadows of angels, squirrel nailed itself to the tree, Adam and Eve, face sticky with guilt, "your hands are dirty", light under house, God, cross-eyed johnny on his roof, juice of guilt.
2. the people and how they "knew", and how his face was sticky with guilt.
3. a: "The pie like a discus", simile and the pie tin is weighing heavily in his hand because he committed a sin, which pertains to the religious theme in the story; b: "the squirrel nailed itself high on the tree", allusion, relates to how Jesus was nailed to the cross and died for humanity's sins.
4. The tone is guilty, as the boy committed his sin, the boy "panicked about stealing the apple pie," as he knew that an apple got Adam and Eve in trouble and God sent them to a desert.
5. Little boys, especially those at the age of six, should not be left unsupervised and allowed to causer mayhem. I believe that being unsupervised by his mother or a babysitter is what led the boy to steal the apple pie, knowing he couldn't be caught.
6. Stealing from a random stranger can lead to stealing from people close to you, because once you steal a first time, there will always be a second, third, fourth time, etc.
7. Situations like the boy's can lead to stricter actions to adolescents, for an example, is the La Porte curfew for teens. Their actions of staying out too late, doing things they're not supposed to do, led to the creation of the La Porte curfew.
8. There haven't been any instances where society didn't view stealing as wrong. It doesn't matter what the reason behind your stealing was, stealing is wrong, nonetheless. End of story.

1) The ten words that we found the evoke religion is holy, sin, god, shadow of angels, proximity of god, hell, Adam, Eve, Sister Marie, trouble with snakes.
2) Here are some phases and words that evoke guilt, I felt bad for not sharing with cross eyed johnny, he remembers the grocer's forehead and started to cry.
3) One figurative language is a metaphor, in the story there is a metaphor " juice of guilt wetting my underarms" meaning that all his sweat is making his underarms wet. Another figurative language is illusion, illusion is also used in this story "A squirrel nailed its self to on a high on the trunk".
4)My overall tone of this book is that they are really religious.
5) I don't think little boys should be left unsupervised at being at age six. The little boy was bored waiting for his parents probably and so he went to go steal a pie. Boredom lead to him stealing
6) It all depends all the little kids but useally it starts with family then friends then random people. so no I don't this him stealing the pie will lead him to taking from family and friends.
7) I absolutely agree that situation of the story, this story does lead to stricter action.
8) Some countries may think stealing is right because what if the kid stole for his family that doesn't have a job or a house or money.

1.) Religion is all over this piece. List ten words or phrases which evoke religion.
1. Hell..............6. Adam
2. Sin...............7. Holy
3. God...............8. Light
4. angels............9. flowery dust
5 Eve..............10. grace

2.) 2. Guilt is very apparent in paragraphs three and four. List two words, phrases or images which evoke a sense of guilt.
1. " Finished and felt like crying"
2. " but what scared me more than falling from grace was being thirsty for the rest of my life."

3.) Figurative language plays a huge role throughout the story! Pick two examples of figurative language, tell me what type each is, & how they contribute to the meaning of the story.
1. "The pie tin glared at me", This is an example of personatafication,(Spelled it wrong) because a pie cannot glare, but us humans can glare.
2. "howl like the sea", this is an example of simile, as it is using like or as.

4.)How would you characterize the overall tone of the piece? What diction (words or phrases) help convey that tone?
A) the tone of the story is guilt, as it is shown in the story that the kid thinks everyone knows what he did when in reality he got away with it. " A car honked, and the driver knew. Mrs. Hancock stood there on the law, hands on the hip, and she knew, My mom (...) knew."

5.) Should little boys be left unsupervised at such a young age? Is that what lead to him stealing in the first place? Explain.
A) A boy should never be left unsupervised at such a young age. At 6 years old he can still do mistakes as his brain is still developing. A good example is this one story named " The Pie " as it shows a kid stealing a pie even though he knows it is wrong.

6.) Does stealing from a random person then lead to stealing from family/friends? Explain.
A) Stealing from strangers wont lead to stealing from friends and family. They don't care how a stranger feels as they don't know him. But when it comes to family, its like stealing from your self.

7.) Yes... as we are the feature and we need a better one than the next generation. Have you seen the little kids cursing? All this could make us look bad as some might think we are the same.

8.)A example could be Stealing from rich and giving it to the poor, this some wont view it as wrong as rich people are sometimes seen as people who don't care about the under class...greedy. I read a story about this... honestly I still think its wrong as its their choice to do what's right or wrong.
